Genetics

The Basics

Genetics is the study of heredity. It attempts to explain how traits are passed from one generation to the next and how these traits determine, in part, the properties of the organism. Genetics is a very large topic with a number of components. Use the links below to get an overview of this extremely interesting topic.

The Details

DNA From the Beginning - This is one of the most complete and simple to understand sites on genetics. It walks you through a series of 41 concepts, explains each, and uses interactive animations and practice problems to make sure you understand. Definitely a great resource even if you only read through each 'concept' page.
Natural Selection - use these three activities to see natural selection and evolution tied to genetics.
Modern Genetics - use this Concord Consortium activity to see how meiosis plays an important role in variation, how genes work together on homologous chromosomes, and how traits are passed from one generation to the next. As a bonus you get to breed dragons :-) If you think you really have got the hang of it, you can continue your exploration with intermediate (part II) and advanced (part III) activities here.
