There will be an anatomy test on all the material we covered thus far: chapter 1, terminology, biochemistry, body regions etc…

The test will be on: Tuesday, 10/11/11

Oct 042011

There will be a test on Monday, 10/10/11 on all the material covered thus far.  That includes the “nature of science” and scientific studies, the PowerPoint given in class, the evolution readings and Darwinian model of evolution, and the prologue reading and associated review questions. (and anything else we covered).

Darwin Reading

Read the handout from Darwin’s Origin of Species given in class.  Use the handout to answer the following questions…

1. What is the phenomena that Darwin is attempting to explain?

2. What data does Darwin rely on for his argument?

3. What is the importance of domestic breeding in Darwin’s argument?

4. Outline the mechanism Darwin offers to account of the phenomena in question.

5. Describe the conception of species that Darwin holds. (Include whether or not species are viewed as malleable or fixed. What role does variation play in Darwin’s thinking about species?)

6. Describe the nature of the “force” (mechanism) that is responsible for the production of new species.

  • On what does that force act?
  • Is it internal to the species or external?
  • What role do the conscious “needs” of the organism play in speciation?

7.  Overall, how does Darwin differ from Lamarck?

Read the handouts given in class from Paley and Lamarck.  These can be difficult to read due to the way these people wrote back in the early 1800s but I expect you to work through it and analyze their writings. For the Paley reading, you should answer the associated questions found on the same handout. For the Lamarck reading, you should answer the questions listed below.

1. To what view does Lamarck object in the first part of the reading?
2. What does Lamarck argue happened to the species alleged to be lost?
3. By what mechanism has that happened? (How specifically?)
4. What data does Lamarck rely on for his argument?
5. Describe the concept of species that Lamarck holds. Include whether or not species are viewed as fixed or malleable. What role does variation play in Lamarck’s thinking about species?
6. Describe the nature of the “force” (mechanism) that is responsible for the production of new species. On what does the force act? Is it internal to the species or external? What role do the conscious “needs” of the organism play in speciation?

* Do not be surprised if some of the prior knowledge and beliefs used by the authors are not immediately apparent. Some are implicit and need to be derived from the general context of the reading.

Prologue Reading

Read the book prologue and answer the following questions:

  • all check and challenge questions
  • Chapter Review: RI #11, UC #1, 2, 3, 10

You should answer these in a single section of your notebook. We will keep adding to this section as we go through the chapters.

Due: 10/3/11

Anatomy Infomercial

Your group will design its own infomercial for a product of your choice. The product may already exist or you may invent your own. The infomercial and product must be rated for television, so keep it clean! This assignment is an opportunity for you to practice your terminology so you will remember it better. Therefore the infomercial must contain at least 35 terminology words. These words may already exist or you may combine your own prefixes, word roots and suffixes to make up your own words. You can also use body regions, body planes, body structures etc…  These words should flow throughout the presentation, not be clumped into one part. Additionally, you should follow these rules:

  • Presentation is 8-12 minutes. You will be penalized if you go under 8 minutes or over 12 minutes (even by 1 second!) – television time is precious and adhered to strictly – the tv station would cut you off.
  • Your group must type the final script and hand it in before your presentation. Each terminology term should be in bold and underlined.
  • You must memorize your parts – you may not have your script in front of you.
  • A group member may hold up cue cards ‘off camera’ but they must also participate on camera>
  • Everyone must participate!
  • You should accentuate each term when you use it in your skit.
  • Optional – you may videotape it ahead of time **
  • You should be excited about your product – I should wonder how I ever lived without it!

** = I have higher expectations for pre-taped versions!

Due:  Friday, 9/29/11

Read the handout given in class (David Attenborough excerpt) and answer the questions on the handout.  Feel free to use the back of the handout and not squeeze the answers into the small space on the front.

Due: Friday, 9/9/11

On my homepage (www.docfleetwood.net), read the paragraph titled “The World Needs Thinkers.”  Be sure to click the ‘read more’ link underneath the paragraph to read the rest of the article.  While you are reading it, write down several items that surprise you or that you find interesting.  We will discuss these in class.  After you finish reading, create a “Twitterized” summary of the entire article in 160 characters or fewer.  Be prepared to share this in class.

Next read the paragraph titled “A Different Approach.”  Be sure to click the ‘read more’ link underneath the paragraph to read the rest of the article.  After you finish reading, create a 7 word summary of the entire article. (exactly 7 words, no more, no fewer).  Be prepared to share this in class.

Final Exams

May 232011

All of my finals are cumulative for the year.  The forensics and anatomy finals are this week for all students who are not exempt (juniors and seniors).  The biology finals are June 3 (B-period) and June 8 (G-period).

May 232011

Use the following links on my biology page to learn about and practice various genetics principles…

karyotype

pedigree

genetics – on the resulting page do the ‘natural selection’ and ‘modern genetics’ links

DNA fingerprinting

Punnett Squares

Also, finish the problem set given out in class.

Due to DCAS testing many of you will miss class on various days.  It is very important that you complete these tutorials and practice problems and then see me if you do not understand the material!!

You will have a test on genetics on Tuesday, May 31st either in class (G-period) or during Activity (B-period).
