Read chapter 1 and answer the questions given out in class. A copy of the question sheet can be found here: biology chapter 1 questions
Due: Tuesday, 11/3
You will have a test on the prologue, chapter 17, the ‘nature of science’, evolution and any other material we have discussed in class. The test will be Wednesday, 10/28/09. There is a practice test available here:
http://www.docfleetwood.net/biology/studyguides/prologuech17nospractice.htm
Be sure to understand the IDEAS behind the questions in the practice test so you will do well on the actual test which will have different questions. In other words, don’t just memorize the practice test answers!
Test Tuesday, 10/27/09 on chapters 1-3, class notes, and the NIGMS book read in class. You can take a short practice test to give you an idea of what to expect here: http://docfleetwood.net/anatomy/studyguides/bioreviewpractice.htm
You will have a test on all things on Wednesday, 10/28/09. You can take a practice test here:
http://www.docfleetwood.net/neuroscience/studyguides/neuropracticetest1.htm
Be sure to understand WHY the correct answers are correct and not just memorize. The actual test questions will be different but cover similar concepts.
Go to the ‘drugs’ section of my wiki located here: http://www.docfleetwood.net/wiki/tiki-index.php?page=Drugs and follow the instructions. Use this site to create a table with the following information: drug name, method of intake, how the drug affects the neurons in the brain. For example… Cocaine, snort, inject or smoke, blocks dopamine reuptake receptors thus prolonging the effect of dopamine. (but yours will be in a nice, neat table format)
Complete the science fair progress report given in class. Be sure to create a timeline for project completion.
Due: Thursday, 10/29/09
Complete the radioactive dating sheet. Also read the Darwin excerpt from Origin of Species and answer the associated questions.
Scientists are developing drugs that could enhance mental performance but might you “remember everything but understand nothing?”

Students must print out the appropriate ISEF science fair forms for their project. Please visit :
http://societyforscience.org/ISEF/document/index.asp
to find the forms you need. Print the forms, fill out the necessary information, and bring the completed forms to class.
Read chapter 17 and answer the questions from the class handout. Answer them in the appropriate section of your notebook. You should also visit the two following web pages for updated information regarding scientific discoveries.
