Genomic Methods

The Basics

There are a variety of techniques used to analyze genomes. A few are listed below with a brief statement of purpose. Deeper explanations can be found by using the links in the More Details section below.

Technique
Purpose
PCR Create many copies of DNA for further analysis
Southern Blot To determine if the DNA between two samples matches at specific regions/genes.
Western Blot To detect specific proteins and compare different samples.
Northern Blot To detect RNA and compare different samples.
