Top 10 New Species 2014

It is pretty amazing when you think about it – that we are still finding new creatures on our planet that we didn’t know existed.  And they don’t have to be microscopic, or even small.  Check out this slideshow from BBC News for a taste of what still remains to be found…

Vision Reading

Neuroscience students should be sure to read pages 542-563 in your book, which is about the eye and vision.  In particular, make sure you know the parts of the eye, extrinsic muscles of the eye and which motions they control, and the visual pathway from the retina to the occipital lobe via the optic nerve, tract, chiasm, etc…  Be sure to note which visual information crosses hemispheres and which does not as it pertains to the eye’s visual field.

Genomic Medicine Guided Questions

As a table group, you will create one Google document and share it with me.  That document will include guiding questions for students while they are watching the HHMI Medicine in the Genomic Era videos.  You will create questions for all 4 parts  You will include the answer to each question directly under each question.  You should use your notes from the videos to determine what is important for viewers to answer and what is not.

Due: Wednesday, 5/7/14

Neuroscience Test and Video Question Sheets

As a table group, you will create one Google document and share it with me.  That document will include guiding questions for students while they are watching the HHMI Molecules & Memory videos.  You will create questions for parts 1, 3 and 4 (I already gave you questions for part 2).  You will include the answer to the questions directly under each question.  You should use your notes from the videos to determine what is important for viewers to answer and what is not.

Due: Wednesday, 5/7/14

You will have a test on Monday, 5/5/14 on the class notes and the 4 videos.  If you watched the videos and completed your homework assignment, you should be good for those questions.  So you mostly want to study your notes and any book reading assignments or handouts you were given.  The test will mostly be on the central nervous system.  Some example test items would include: parts of the brain and what they do, parts of the spinal cord, spinal reflexes, disease conditions, memory, etc…

Test: Monday, 5/5/14

Money Money Money

Individually, you should complete the correct answers to the Money Facts sheet.

As a group, you should recreate the ‘new’ $100 bill that the US government recently released.  You must follow the rules and use the paper I gave you in class.

You should label the bill with letters or numbers and create a key. These labels should point out the security and ‘additional’ features of the bill that are used to prevent counterfeiting.  You should have approximately 10-15 ‘features’ noted on the bill.

On the paper with the key, you must also explain how the ‘money pen’ that store clerks use to check for counterfeit money works. What it looks like if the paper is real or counterfeit and why it looks that way.

You can find links to resources here: http://www.docfleetwood.net/wiki/tiki-index.php?page=Counterfeiting

Due:  Thursday, 5/8/14 (period E) or Friday, 5/9/14 (period B)  at the beginning of class
