You will have a test on all the information we have covered thus far. That includes, but is not limited to:
- Top causes of death in the USA and the World
- know the relative order of the causes
- know ball-park numbers for the causes
- know what each condition/disease is and how it kills people (as discussed in class and in the handouts) – except for cancer, which we will discuss in more detail later
- know the other diseases/conditions we discussed in class (e.g. malaria, sickle cell anemia)
- Computer Modeling of Disease
- know the epidemiology terminology from the handout given in class
- understand and be able to apply the equations modeling disease spread and know the meaning of each variable in those equations
- know the differences between viruses and bacteria and parasites
- Know how viruses replicate
- know the causative microbe associated with each disease in the handout from class (e.g. bacteria, virus, parasite, prion)
- know how to calculate R(0) and the meaning of its value in relation to an epidemic
- know how to calculate incidence and prevalence
- know how antibiotics and vaccinations work
- know how the immune system works with regard to white blood cells, antibodies, and antigens (as discussed in class)
