Respiratory and Digestive Readings 2013

In Chapter 23, read and know table 23.1 on page 803.

In Chapter 23, read pages 836-844 including ‘related terms’

  • Answer the Clinical Questions on page 839
  • Answer the Clinical Application questions # 1, 2 on page 847

In Chapter 24, (pg 848-902), read the information associated with each “homeostasis icon.”  This is the pyramid icon with a beam on top.  For example, the first is on page 853 regarding peritonitis.  The second is on page 857 regarding ankyloglossia.  Continue reading all of them in the chapter and take notes on the conditions as they will be on the test.

  • Answer the Clinical Application questions on page 907 # 2, 4

STEM Chapter 1

Read chapter 1 in the STEM book.  You will use this to start to generate possible ideas for your own research project.  Remember that you will be designing your own research project next year and continue that into your junior year.  This will help you start that process.

Answer the chapter questions on page 11.  For question #3, you should complete the Student Handout #1 on page 14 for each of your top three research ideas.  Therefore, in the end, you will have 3 different possible research ideas and 3 completed Student Handout #1 sheets (pg. 14) – one Student Handout for each idea.

Neurological Testing Practical

You will have a practical examination on your ability to differentiate and diagnose problems at the following spinal cord levels: C-5, C-6, C-7, C-8, T-1, L-4, L-5, S-1.  You must know how to test the muscle, dermatome and reflex associated with each cord level as instructed in class. (note that some cord levels do not have an associated reflex)  You will actually perform these tests on a patient (me) and be graded on both your knowledge and ability to perform muscle, sensory and reflex testing.  You will also be questioned on the scales used to grade muscles and reflexes.  Testing will take place on December 10, 11, and 12 – you will signup for a particular time slot on a sheet posted in the classroom.

Wand Experiment Rewrite

Redo your wand experiment based on the peer review you received.  When you turn in the assignment, be sure to include the original experiment, your rewrite, the peer review and the final version.  These should all be stapled together with the final version on top.

Due: Monday, 11/18/13

Digestive Disorder Presentations 2013

You will research the disorder I gave to you in class and…

1. Give a 5-8 minute presentation – the type of presentation is up to you – it can be a lecture, ppt, video, etc… but should include pictures as appropriate. Make it interesting! Be sure to include information about your condition such as…

  • What is it?
  • What are the signs and symptoms?
  • How do we detect/diagnose it? (genetic, imaging, blood test, visually, etc…)
  • How do we treat it?
  • What is the prognosis if untreated?  treated?

2. Write a 5 question (multiple choice) quiz (per disease). Include the answers and make sure that your classmates will be able to answer those questions after your presentation as they may be on the upcoming test.

3. Hand in a summary (1 page or less) of your disorder and your quiz (with distractors and the correct answers noted!).

Due: Wednesday, 12/4/13
