Drugs at a Mouse Party 2014

Go to my neuroscience wiki page on drugs located here:

http://www.docfleetwood.net/wiki/tiki-index.php?page=Drugs

Complete the “lesson” links to learn how a neuron works, what happens at the synapse and how drugs affect this.  As an added bonus, the “Mouse Party” activity is pretty funny 🙂

Use the information from the site to create a table in a Google Spreadsheet with the following information: drug name, method of intake, how the drug affects the neurons in the brain, and how the drug kills you.  For example…  Cocaine, snort, inject or smoke, blocks dopamine reuptake receptors thus prolonging the effect of dopamine, stimulant increases heart rate and causes a heart attack or hyperthermia or brain damage. (but yours will be in a nice, neat table format)

Share that Google Spreadsheet with my tfleetwood charterschool email address.

Name the spreadsheet as follows: LastName FirstName Drugs Neuroscience E 2014a

Torso Visceral Practical 2014

Your task: To correctly replace all of the internal organs back into the supplied torso and correctly state the function(s) of each replaced organ and other assigned items. You will have 2 minutes to complete the task.

Your grade: You will start with 100 points. You will lose 1 point per second for each second over 2 minutes. You will lose 5 points for each incorrectly stated function but you may correct yourself prior to finishing and receive full credit. If you get 3 or more functions incorrect, the clock will continue to run until you have corrected yourself to only have 2 or fewer errors. Therefore, the clock will only stop when both of the following conditions are met:

  • you have correctly named and replaced all the organs
  • you have no more than 2 errors in stating the functions of all the organs

If you replace all the organs and state their functions within 2 minutes you will earn a 100%.

Practice:  We will not spend class time practicing. You will need to find your own time to come and practice – e.g. activity period, during your study hall, lunch, before school, after school, etc…. You have two weeks to prepare. Be gentle with the torso, you do not need to force any of the parts. If you are forcing it then you are probably wrong!

You will take the practical during activity period or after school – see me for the sign up sheet.

The practical begins on Thursday, October 16, 2014 and continues through Thursday, October 23, 2014.

Brain Facts Book

Download the Brain Facts book from the Society for Neuroscience.  You can find the latest version of the book here: http://www.brainfacts.org/about-neuroscience/brain-facts-book/

Note there are multiple formats so you can download the one that is best for you (e.g. PDF, MOBI, etc..) – if you don’t know which to choose, download the PDF.  There are also audio files if you are more of an auditory learner.

Once you have downloaded the files, read the Introduction and Chapter 1.

Due: Tuesday, 9/30/14

Descriptive Statistics and Graphing

You should complete the following for homework:

  1. Finish the Descriptive Statistics Walk-through in Google Sheets if you didn’t finish it in class.
  2. Read Chapter 8 in your STEM book (Graphing) and answer the questions on the homework sheet given in class.
  3. If I share another Google Sheet with you about graphing, you do not have to complete it yet.  You should wait until we do it in class.

M&M Peer Review

You will peer review the Morbidity & Mortality report of the group that I assigned you in class.  They should have shared their Google Doc with you.  You should also make sure you share your Google Doc with your assigned reviewers.  You should use Google’s ‘insert comments’ feature to make comments on the document you are reviewing.  You can use the rubric used for junior research as a good starting point for providing feedback as a reviewer.  That rubric can be viewed here: Junior Research Rubric (note: it has been slightly edited for this assignment).  After you receive reviews for your report, do not delete the comments.  Simply make any changes you deem appropriate and mark the comment resolved.  When I grade your paper, I will look at the comments that the reviewers made.
